The Oathbinders | Notes About the Setting
The Fortress-Prison of the Oathbinders, a fastidious citadel that serves as their main base of operations, lies a short distance beyond the walls of Anvillon. Only a fraction of the tower's length extends above ground - the amicable face for clients and visitors, topped by a landing space for aerial transports on the roof. The services offered here primarily relate to contract enforcement on the behalf of one or more of the concerned parties. For a fee in proportion to the extent and value of the agreement, a team of enforcers will execute any transactions (including defending the goods against bandits and pirates during transit) and, in the event that a participant fails or refuses to meet the terms, will ensure that appropriate compensation is taken or punishment is meted out as recompense. For cases between individuals, a single squad is generally all that needs to be assigned for all but the most high-profile names. However, the forces involved in matters between empires are more diverse, as while a larger team may do the job of transporting precious cargo, exacting a penalty for non-compliance on a national level requires a full siege force and has gradually led the Oathbinders to orient themselves towards this style of combat. These services and more are invaluable to the leading figures within many of the most powerful company-clans of Anvillon, and the wider Iron Empires, who would rather pay a sizeable expense than go to the effort of mustering security forces and punitive battalions of their own when they could be focusing on their research instead.
A smaller precinct is maintained within Anvillon itself, at the border
between the Interlocks and the Firstbuilt districts, but the focus of
the Oathbinders remains outward while internal security is left under
the purview of other enforcement groups. The main fuction served by this
building is as a go-between for the main headquarters and the
wealthiest patrons of the city, many of whom are loathe to venture
outside the comfort of their properties without good cause.
The real work within the primary complex is carried out on the floors below ground, to shield it from anyone trying to get in, or in rare cases, back out. Heading downwards from ground level, each intake is brought to the one of the processing areas where it is categorised and assigned a storage location on one of the levels further down. The contents to be interred are usually one of two kinds: contracts and notarized documents detailing the agreements over which these enforcers have oversight, or suppliers who have failed to hold up to their end of such bargains and debtors who have failed to pay up.
