The Background of the Battlefield | Notes About the Setting

It is the assumption of many, for indeed, the stories as they are retold in such a manner, that only warriors head to the field of battle. The knights and guards of the Kingdoms, enforcers of the Empires, and even the scrap-metal monsters and otherworldly malevolences who exist beyond humanity. Upon deeper consideration, it becomes apparent that it would be negligent for so much to be invested into these forces, only for them to be left to their fates without support. It is, therefore, that for each of these groups there is an assembly of other groups whose duty it is to aid and support them.

The Northern Kingdoms
At all times, during peace and times of conflict, the famed knights of the Northern Kingdoms are shadowed by their squires and attendants. The majority of these individuals are either aspiring not-yet-knights, who will remain in the position temporarily to gather experience before the trials to ascend to knighthood, or permanent retainers that have served the knightly orders for, in some cases, several decades.

The Iron Empires
The support that the enforcers clans throughout the Iron Empires receive is highly transactional. For the requisite fee, retrieval crews will maintain vigilance over their clients and, in their time of need, will swoop in from dropships or use esoteric translocation beams to whisk their charges to safety.
